Mechanisms of development of the alter-national myth
Mechanisms are special schemes, or procedures, which can provide self-preservation of the alter-national myth and its connection with the changing reality of ‘meeting’ another culture. These mechanisms comprise:
– opposing the alter-national culture to the national ‘self’. This is a basic mechanism that implies negative estimation of ‘the other’ as something alien, against the background of absolute positive evaluation of ‘the self’;
– equating elements of another culture with the self as a factor of accepting other norms and values at a certain stage of its perception;
– disequating particular image and semantic elements of the alter-national myth as a result of new perception of another culture. Mechanisms of equating and disequating allow the myth to react to the historical, political and spiritual events of ‘meeting’ another culture.
